Every month, forums fill up with threads from people who installed a "Pure Premium mod" or used Orbot to hide their traffic — and immediately received a permanent ban. This is not bad luck. It is a predictable outcome with a clear technical explanation.
What does Pure detect in a modified APK?
When you install a modified version of Pure, the app carries a different APK signing certificate than the official release. Pure's servers verify this certificate during authentication. A mismatch signals that the client is unofficial — and the account is flagged immediately.
Beyond the certificate, modified apps typically:
- Remove or alter the code that handles Pure's anti-fraud checks
- Include additional code (often malicious) that can exfiltrate your credentials
- Expose your access token, which Pure can revoke and blacklist
- Leave traces in the device's app installation history
Why Orbot does not help either
Orbot routes traffic through the Tor network, changing your apparent IP address. As we covered in the OnlyLike article on why VPN does not solve the ban problem, IP address is just one of 40+ signals Pure analyzes. Tor exit nodes are also widely blacklisted — Pure's system flags them as high-risk traffic sources automatically.
The "Pure clone" trap
Some users find what look like official Pure apps on third-party download sites. These fall into two categories: outdated official builds that no longer pass Pure's version checks, or fake apps designed to steal login credentials. Neither allows normal account operation.
